.Rethinking Thin by Gina Kolata
Submitted by newhaven on May 20, 2007 - 3:11pm.Has anyone read Gina Kolata's new book Rethinking Thin. Here are some excerpts from a NYTimes review.
"Kolata argues that being fat is not something people have much control over. Most people who are overweight struggle to change their shape throughout their lives, but remain stuck within a relatively narrow weight range set by their genes. For those determined to foil biology, strict dieting is a life sentence. 'I am a fat man in a thin man’s body,' an M.I.T. obesity researcher who shed his unwanted pounds years ago tells Kolata.
Drugs Or Lifestyle Change
Submitted by Dwiz on May 1, 2007 - 10:21am.I just read an interesting article from the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) that begins with, "taking prescription drugs to prevent diabetes cannot be justified when lifestyle changes are just as effective, say US scientists.
The article goes on to say, "Trials show rosiglitazone pills do work, but so does weight loss, which is a safer and cheaper way to avoid type 2 diabetes, the researchers argue."

The joys of cooking
Submitted by calypso on March 14, 2007 - 8:03am.I love to cook and love to eat. As we begin to focus more on changing what we eat and how we eat, it is actually a little challenging. The foods we grew up with and love, don't always work and the ways we cooked don't always work. This makes us uneasy lots of times.
We have just got to start playing games with ourselves so that we can enjoy this part of the journey and not resist it. There is so much stress when you have to resist the changes one must sometimes make in life.
Weight Loss & Portion Control
Submitted by Dwiz on March 13, 2007 - 12:55am.Recently, I spoke with a plate salesman. I explained to him that I was searching for nine inch plates to reduce the amount of food I would serve myself. I am compelled to eat all of the food on my plate. I believe many people behave the same way. And, they also serve their food on 12 inch plates.
To my surprise, he said that European plates were smaller than American plates. I had not idea that Americans' plates had been "super-sized" along with burgers & fries.
Now, I am more determined to find some attractive nine inch "entre" plates.
