Dieting and Weight Loss Mythbusters
1. I can eat pasta and other foods that are high in calories or carbohydrates as long as I go to the gym.
Going to the gym does not give you permission to eat just anything. In fact, many people actually gain weight when they start exercising partly because they think that exercising negates the harmful effects of calories and carbohydrates in the foods that they like to eat. However, for a host of reasons, working out does not give you the freedom to eat anything you want.

5 A day starch versus 5 A day fruit and veggies
Submitted by calypso on March 15, 2007 - 9:38pm.It is clear that if you start the day with fruit or veggies, you can actually quite easily make the goal of 5 servings a day. Today I had one at breakfast, 2 at lunch and 2 at dinner. Yippee! 5 servings of fruit and veggies today. I had two servings of starch today. I feel pretty good overall, not overly full and not at all hungry. Once we get through this phase, we will need to start talking about the rest of our nutrition; protein, fluids and so on.

5 A day starch versus 5 A day fruit and veggies
Submitted by calypso on March 14, 2007 - 9:44pm.Well today was indeed a challenge. I seem to be having trouble getting my 5 A day fruit and veggies consumed. It seems a lot easier to reduce the starch servings versus the discipline of increasing my fruits and veggies. My results for today, 2 servings of starch and 2 servings of fruits and veggies. Not a very good report card for today. This just highlights how hard it is to do this consistently. I am being very focused on the starch at least, but until I ramp up the other part of the equation, I will not have very good nutrition, and this is ultimately not sustainable.

5 A day starch versus 5 A day fruit and veggies
Submitted by calypso on March 12, 2007 - 9:45pm.I have been very lazy about losing about 5% of my body fat, a goal that I set with my brother for the New Year. He has been very rigorous about sticking to a high protein, low carb diet. I fell off the wagon within weeks. I am re-commiting as of today to increase my exercise to at least 30 minutes per day and to stay away from the starch!
