Coffee, Bad for Diabetes

.

Research indicates caffeine found in coffee, tea, caffein containing soda pops, and chocolate reduces diabetics' control of their blood sugar/glucose).

Caffeine appears to:
Prevent some cells from using insulin.
This prevents glucose from entering those cells and building up in the blood;

Dehydrates the body. Dehydration causes many problems with the blood -- like causing the body to secrete chemicals that prevent some cells from getting enough water. This leads to cell stress and cell death.

Anyone having trouble controlling their blood glucose and drink coffee - especially lots of coffee, may want to stop drinking for a month or so to see if it makes a difference to them.

There is a lot of information available on the web that can explain this situation

These websites give information on caffeine. Nutrition Action, a publication of the Center for Science in the Public Interest latest edition focused on caffeine as well. I learned that it takes over 500 mg of caffeine (25 oz of coffee) to get the dehydrating effect. Of couorse this depends on the strength of the coffee.

Was this a large scale study? It seems to counter other studies that say the opposite. It seems, like the glycemic index tool, that the proof of caffeine's impact is in the individual monitoring results. Has any one else noticed poorer control of glucose after drinking coffee or caffeine containing beverages?

Should Diabetics Caffeinate or Not?

Robin,
Your question is right on. The article from the BBC was based on an non-significant 10 person test.

See: http://news.bbc.co.uk/go/em/fr/-/1/hi/health/7209385.stm

What impressed me was I sent the article to several relatives with type 2 diabetes. One called (which is rare)to tell me in the past she had lost control lost control of her legs and physical strength at work. She went on to say during that time she had replaced her meals with 5 - 6 cups of coffee. Although, her glucose levels were extremely high she felt OK.

Consequently, I thought this event called for a blog entry.

Which web sites will give me and others more accurate information?
