How do you help someone in denial of diabetes?

I hear many concerned family members struggle with their parent or sibling that is "not taking care of their diabetes". The next question is "how do I make them do better?" Since we can't make any one do anything what does help?

My Approach to Helping

I have several family members with Type 2 diabetes. In order to help them, I have had to become far more informed about diabetes than them. I provide them information specific to them. I ask questions about their nutrition, medication, and exercise. Since they are not web-savvy, I call them to inform them about diabetes developments important to them like the Avandia debacle.

My sister's husband has responded by buying a computer, getting on the web, and joining the Type Free community. I e-mail him & her articles like the effect of coffee on glucose control. She responded by calling me and sharing 2 serious events she had experienced (she believes) resulting from the dehydrating effect of drinking too much coffee.
