Doctors' Ties to Drug Makers Are Put on Close View

In today's NYT.com there is a great article by Gardiner Harris & Janet Roberts on the financial relationship between drug makers and high level physicians. Click on the title of the article below to access the article (if it still exist).

For the first time a State (Minnesota)has revealed the monetary contributions pharmaceutical companies have made to physicians - directly and indirectly. The article also asks the question of whether drug companies are buying influence.

Benefit: Authors exposed relationships that drive some physicians to prescribe certain drugs.

Take Care of Yourself

An interesting article from Liz Taylor in the Seattle Times indicated we are ultimately responsible for caring for our health. She quotes, "Around 90 percent of the care a person needs to manage a chronic disease must come from the patient" - so says the California Healthcare Foundation (www.chcf.org).

This means, among other things, getting educated to understand our condition and its treatment, staying motivated, learning how to deal with emotional stress and fatigue, changing our lifestyle to better support good health and being involved in decisions about our treatment.

Fats Block Health Benefits of Vitamin C

Today, I read an article from the BBC,(the British Broadcasting Corp). They wrote that eating a lot of fat prevents vitamin C (ascorbic acid) from blocking certain stomach cancers. They found vitamin C locked up potential cancer-causing compounds that are made when saliva and food mixes with stomach acid. Vitamin C is an antioxidant.

The ongoing research suggests eating balanced meals.
