Weight Loss & Portion Control

.

Recently, I spoke with a plate salesman. I explained to him that I was searching for nine inch plates to reduce the amount of food I would serve myself. I am compelled to eat all of the food on my plate. I believe many people behave the same way. And, they also serve their food on 12 inch plates.

To my surprise, he said that European plates were smaller than American plates. I had not idea that Americans' plates had been "super-sized" along with burgers & fries.

Now, I am more determined to find some attractive nine inch "entre" plates.

Have any of you switched to smaller plates for your main meals?

Waist Not Want Not

You don't want a waist measurement of 37 inches (94cm) or more for men, and 31.5 inches (80cm) or more for a woman. These dimensions are considered to raise the risk of Type 2 diabetes and increase the severity of complications.

For men of South Asian origin a waist measurement of 35 inches (89cm) or more is considered a risk.

Visceral fat, the saturated fat around your organs causes serious health risks and leads to heart disease and heart attacks. On the other hand, subcutaneous fat, the fat under the skin is a more passive and innocent fat.

EXERCISE to reduce visceral fat and future suffering.

Eat Zero Fats -- Bad

For those of you who think eating zero fats is a good thing - think again. Your body needs less than 30 percent fat in your daily diet. The fat is used for life processes and energy storage. A zero to very low fat diet will force the body to convert carbs to saturated fat. With little to no exercise this fat collects around your stomach and other organs.

Saturated fat has been linked to diabetes, heart disease, and liver damage. Saturated fats are solid at room temperature - Found in red meats, coconuts (87%), butter, cheese, whole milk, etc.

To reduce your risk to diabetes and heart disease, replace saturated fat with mono-unsaturated and poly-unsaturated fats and oils. these fats are liquid at room temperature - found in canola oil, olive oil, soybean, fish, most nuts, etc.

Read food ingredient labels. Eat as much fish as you can, but pregnant and breastfeeding women should avoid fish that are high in Mercury like swordfish, King Mackerel, shark, and golden bass.

Oh yeah. Exercise!

Some Lose Weight and Health

Some young diabetics have been doing the craziest thing. They knowingly reduce their insulin dosage to lose weight. They lose weight by depriving their bodies of the right amounts of insulin. When the body gets too little insulin all of the cells cannot absorb enough glucose to maintain good weight.

The glucose that is not absorbed into the cells concentrate in the bloodstream. For many years the extra glucose attacks the blood vessels and organs. The net result is a future severe diabetes complications.

Parents be aware of diabetics losing weight while have high blood glucose levels.

I use bowls!

That is funny about the plate sizes! Brings to mind those enamel camping plates we bought from the Army and Navy stores of years ago. I have started using a bowl for my meals. One bowl is all I allow myself, because the urge to keep going is really tough. Restaurants are the hardest, the plates at Cheesecake Factory are really large. If the food is good, it is hard to eat one half of the plate and ask for the rest to go. But that is what we are all going to have to do. Here's to smaller plates...or bowls!

Body fat versus weight loss?

This is a hard question? Most of us aren't even taught to know that there might be a difference. If we lose only 5% of our body fat we are onto a good thing. At the end of the day, who really cares???

What's So Hard

What is so hard about loosing weight and keeping it off? Oh yeah, it takes time.

You exercise - hey, just walk when you can. Park your car away from your destination (safely).

Eat right - Read food labels. Eat less fats and simple carbs. Eat foods with high fiber content.

Stop whining - Make time to lose weight.
