5 A day starch versus 5 A day fruit and veggies

.

I have been very lazy about losing about 5% of my body fat, a goal that I set with my brother for the New Year. He has been very rigorous about sticking to a high protein, low carb diet. I fell off the wagon within weeks. I am re-commiting as of today to increase my exercise to at least 30 minutes per day and to stay away from the starch!

I love bread and rice and potatoes and especially pasta. I do love fruit and veggies as well, but it's sometines hard to get to that salad if bread is in the way. So my goal as of today is to reduce my starch, not stay away completely. Up the veggies and add 30 minutes of walking or stretching or strength training each day.

I figure that on a given day, I might have two slices of bread for breakfast, that's 2 servings. I might have a salad and bread or crackers for lunch, that's one serving and then I might have quite a bit of rice with meat and a veggie for dinner. That's at least two servings of starch at dinner. That's my 5 a day starch.

So now, if I could get this down to three servings of starch a day, all whole grain of course, then I could more easily increase my veggies each day. So I will try to add veggies to eggs, like in an omelet, or stir fried with sausages for breakfast. That should fill me up with no more than one slice of bread. I can bypass the starch at lunch, and stick with the salad and lots of protein like a chicken or tuna or some cheese and nuts (almonds are my favorite). For dinner, I will discipline myself to one serving of one of my favorite starches, 1/2 cup of pasta is what I love; 1/2 cup of rice would be my second favorite. For some people it's a sweet potato or more bread. So that is roughly my game plan. Tomorrow, I can talk about my exercise program. And that I plan to keep very simple as well.

What's your 5 A day starch regimen that might be holding you back from taking that body fat down by about 5%?
