Managing Complications

.

Diabetes is often a debilitating disease that you will have for the rest of your life once you have fully developed it. Total, Americans pay more than $130 billion each year to treat their Diabetes. By eliminating or reducing your chances of getting Diabetes, you will not only improve your quality of life, but you will also reduce the amount of money you need to spend on maintaining your health.

How to Reduce Your Risk

According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA) managing your diet and body weight can help to prevent Diabetes in someone with pre-Diabetes and it can help to reduce the affects of Diabetes if you already have the disease. By making very simple lifestyle changes early, you can stay healthy, active and strong.

Many people think that in order to prevent Diabetes or to manage the complications of Diabetes, they need to make drastic lifestyle changes, such as a complete diet make-over or becoming a gym-rat. While eating healthy and exercising can certainly reduce the risks associated with Diabetes (and other health-related conditions), you do not need to make large-scale changes in order to be healthy.

In fact, according to the ADA, you may be able to delay the on-set of Diabetes and Diabetes complications by taking the right medication . However, nutrition and exercise have the same effects on your body as medication, as long as you do not yet have full-blown Diabetes.
